Slate is formed in rivers and ponds from clay accumulating in thin layers at the bottom of the waterbeds and therefore has a naturally
textured surface.

Although most commonly available in dark neutral shades of black, charcoal, gray, pewter, and brown, variations with highlights of blue, green and red can also be found. Completely non-porous, slate can withstand some abuse but corner and edge pieces may be more vulnerable.
